In the month of Rabi’ Al-Awwal of this year, Ibraheem, the son of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) from Maria the Copt, died. The boy was 18 months old [At-Tabaqat Al-Kubra by Ibn Saad].
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went to him when the child was dying, and he (peace be upon him) hugged and kissed him. The Messenger’s eyes filled with tears when he saw the boy dying, so Abdur-Rahman ibn Auf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, in astonishment, <‘Even you, Oh Messenger of Allah?!’
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied, <‘Oh Ibn Auf, it is mercy,’ [then he (peace be upon him) said,] ‘Truly, the eyes sheds tear and the heart is sad, but we only say what pleases Allah. Truly, we are grieved by your departure, Ibraheem’> [related by Al-Bukhari].
Al-Fadl ibn Abbas washed the child when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and Al-Abbas were sitting nearby, and then the body was carried to the grave. The Messenger (peace be upon him) stood at the grave with Al-Abbas standing by his side and Al-Fadl ibn Abbas and Usama ibn Zayid descended into the grave.
There was an eclipse of the sun on that day, so the people said it was because of the death of Ibraheem. Consequently, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, <Truly, the sun and moon do not eclipse due to the death or birth of anyone, but they are two signs of the signs of Allah. Therefore, if you see one of them, pray (the Eclipse Prayer)> [related by Al-Bukhari]. Ibraheem (may Allah have mercy upon him) died on Tuesday, 10th of the month of Rabi’a Al-Awwal, in the 10th year of Hijrah.
