The first group of Ansar [the Helpers of Medinah] embrace Islam
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) continued experiencing such difficulties until one Hajj season, at Aqabah in Mina, he met a group from the tribe of Al-Khazraj for whom Allah intended good. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked them, <‘Who are you?’ They replied, ‘A group from the tribe of Al-Khazraj.’ Therefore the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked, ‘Are the Jews your neighbours?’ They replied, ‘Yes.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then asked, ‘Will you sit down for me to talk to you?’ They replied, ‘Of course.’> So they sat with the Messenger of Allah and he called them to Allah (Glorified is He), told them about Islam and recited Quran to them.
Some of the group of Al-Khazraj had heard from the Jews that a prophet will soon be sent and that his time was immenent. And the Jews kept threatening them that they would follow him and that Allah would give them victory through him over the Arabs. So when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) talked to that group and called them to Allah, they said to each other, “Oh our people, you know, by Allah, that he is the Prophet who the Jews promised would come. Why do we not believe in him before them (the Jews)?” Therefore, they accepted what they were called to by believing the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and accepted his invitation to enter Islam.
They said, “We have left our people when there were great enmity and envy between them. No people had more enmity and evil between them than them (our people). We hoped Allah would unite them through you, so we will go to them and call them to follow you, and ask them to follow what we have accepted from you with regards to the religion you brought. If Allah unites them all under your leadership, there will be no one who will be stronger than you.” They then left the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to return to their city, after they had accepted faith and believed in this religion. They were six men in all from Al-Khazraj tribe: Asad ibn Zurarah ibn Uday, Auf ibn Al-Harith ibn Rafa’h (Ibn Afraa), Rafi ibn Malik ibn Al-Ajlan, Qutbah ibn Amir ibn Hadeedah, Uqbah ibn Amir ibn Naaby and Jabir ibn Abdullah ibn Ri’ab [The Prophet’s Biography by Ibn Hesham].
