Allah (Glorified is He) says, {You will not find people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having love for anyone who opposes Allah and His Messenger, though they be their fathers, their sons, their brothers or their clan. Allah has inscribed belief upon such people’s hearts and will reinforce them inspiration from Him} [Surah Al-Mujadilah: 22] Loving the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entails loving and respecting those of his family who entered Islam and acted on his Sunnah (collection of sayings, deeds and silent approvals of the Messenger of Allah): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, [related by Muslim] The Messenger of Allah’s family include his wives, descendants and his relatives, those for whom charity is forbidden. It is not permissible to speak ill about them or to insult them. Similarly, it is not permissible to claim that they are infallible or to supplicate them instead of supplicating Allah. Love of the Messenger of Allah’s Companions who believed in him (peace be upon him) and believed all that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said entails not talking badly about them at all, as Allah praises them when He (Glorified is He) says in His Glorious Book, {Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are fierce to the disbelievers, merciful to one another. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking Allah’s good favour and His pleasure. Their mark is on their faces: traces of prostration} [Surah Al-Fath: 29] And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said about them, [related by Muslim] It is obligatory on every Muslim to love the Messenger of Allah’s family and his Companions, and be good to them, and also know their rights, praise them and take them as an example to follow. A Muslim should not delve into any disagreements the Companions had between themselves, be hostile to their enemies, those who insult them, or those who talk badly about them. At the same time, one should love the knowledgeable people who spread the Messenger of Allah’s Sunnah and guidance, and who are loyal to him. One should also avoid those who speak badly about the Companions, trying to lower their good reputation. In a similar way, a Muslim should love all those who follow the Messenger of Allah’s Sunnah and take him (peace be upon him) as an example to follow. Furthermore, a Muslim has to be hostile to the Messenger of Allah’s enemies among the disbelievers, hypocrites and those who have broken ties with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), his family or his Companions. The Muslim should also be hostile to those who perform innovations in the religion or any other form of misguidance.
